Program Updates - Feb. 2012
Clinical Mental Health Services
During a recent school Committee on Special Education meeting, Sam and his family’s participation in the school-based, on-site clinical mental health services was being reviewed. School personnel and the mental health provider recommended that the family’s involvement in the program continue. The family had many reservations about participation, beginning from the time of initial referral to the program.
During the meeting, Sam's Mom explained that each Wednesday when she woke him up for school, Sam would ask what day it was. When she would say, "It's Wednesday," Sam would proclaim "It's a Meghan day!" and Sam’s entire morning process was made much easier.
This was a strong indicator that Sam was benefiting from the service, since prior to services he was upset most mornings, and tried to avoid going to school. Sam was present while his Mom related her story, and as he quietly played with his dinosaurs, his face lit up and he happily agreed with her.
