It was all about the students at February’s Sentinel Award Celebration!
By Wanda McQueen Feb. 2010
Ticonderoga Elementary School recognized their students during a recent Sentinel Awards Assembly. Students received recognition for outstanding academic achievement and exhibiting good character. The assembly was filled with music, awards, and performances.
All joined in for the singing of the alma mater to open the festivities followed by a reminder of what it means to be a good audience member. The reciting of the school pledge showcased the commitment to promoting good students, good community members, and good citizens. Students are encouraged to be safe, be respectful, and be responsible. Thumbs Up awards were given to students who modeled good behavior in the hallway, cafeteria, and classrooms.
The kindergarten students gave a special performance to highlight what it means to be healthy. They sang to the audience as they performed this skillfully choreographed number with precision! The audience applauded and cheered to show their appreciation for the kindergarten students’ hard work.
Academic achievement was also honored. Recognition was given to those students who received an average of 90 or better, and those students who had received a perfect score on all exams in one subject area. Students were validated when a teacher remarked that he never was able to get perfect marks on all exams while he was in school.
Students weren’t the only ones being honored at this event. Staff received recognition for their efforts as well. The kitchen staff was recognized for the extra work they put in daily to provide a “healthy snack” to all students; Mrs. Thatcher for her creativity in the classroom to making learning fun; and Mrs. Granger for volunteering to prepare school reports.
Teachers received applause for promoting community service within their classrooms. Community service activities included: holiday cards to nursing home residents, holiday cards to soldiers oversees, and letters to troops. Mrs. Defayette’s fourth graders received a visit from a returning soldier to personally thank the class for their letters. Mrs. Moore’s class received a formal thank you letter along with an American flag that had hung over our military headquarters in Iraq. What an outstanding honor for the elementary school!
Students and staff returned to their classrooms to the beat of “I’m So Excited” and were encouraged to stay excited all day! Excitement was certainly evident in the faces of the students as they danced cheerfully in single file away from the cafeteria, stopping to give their elementary principal an occasional hug as they passed.
