Families in first and second grade were invited to participate in the FAST program (one kindergarten family was given a special invite to join during the second week of the program).   Ten families agreed to participate in the program and we had a total of eight families attend the FAST sessions and graduate.
The FAST team consisted of Christa Cole, Dave Wyant, Kerry Fingland, and Polleen Tyler.   The program was held from 5-7:30 on Thursdays, and was held in the Ticonderoga Elementary school.
This program was a great success and the parents expressed their appreciation for the program.  Parent comments include, “It was good for the girls-having family time.”, “I think it brought all of us  a little bit closer.”, “The activities are good for the kids and everyone.”, “I think he (child) has made new friends and enjoyed his time at FAST.”,     “We had fun.”.
Our team observed that the families quickly learned the FAST routines and appeared to enjoy their time together during meal and game times.   Many of the families grew in confidence and comfort level as the program progressed.  We also noticed family dynamics change during the program--Our team reinforced and encouraged the role of the parents as the center of the family.
During parent time, parents at first struggled to talk, but again improvements were made as the program continued.   In a survey given during week 7 most parents reported feeling happy with the program and that they would continue to use some of the program components at home after graduation.  Several reported being interested in attending again with a younger child as the focus.
Kids time was also a major success—The students enjoyed the many diverse projects and activities that were offered.  Parents reported that knowing the kids time activity ahead of time helped them plan ahead and motivate their children.
Graduation on May 7th was the culmination of the FAST program.  Families invited guests which included Mrs. Dreimiller (school principal), Marsha Sawyer (Safe schools/Healthy Students School Community Coordinator), Mike Edson (In sentinel costume to give out graduation certificates),  classroom teachers, and family members.   The atmosphere at graduation was one of excitement and pride.
The FAST team is proud of all that the families accomplished during the spring cycle of FAST at Ticonderoga Elementary School.
