Thumbs Up to Students in Ticonderoga
By Nicole Egan, Site Coordinator -
June 2010
This year our PBIS team started a recognition system using “Thumbs Up” slips. Students receive the slips by “getting caught” being safe, responsible, or respectful by any adult in the building and they thoroughly enjoy receiving a “thumbs up”. Students keep one half of the slip to show friends, teachers, or family and to explain why they received it. They can be seen carrying the slips around proudly and showcasing them often. Many students bring them to my reading group—even if they received them days or weeks before. They are so proud they continue to carry them around.

The other half of the slip gets entered into weekly and monthly drawings for prizes such as lunch with a teacher, board games, and gift certificates donated from area businesses. We are especially excited about the end of the year drawing at the final Sentinel Assembly for all students receiving slips. We have received monetary prizes from the local American Legion to recognize students who have displayed great citizenship. We have also purchased Slip-n-Slides and Ladder Ball for additional end-of-year prizes for students chosen in kindergarten through 5th grade. It is our hope that these kinds of prizes will encourage family activity over the summer. The PBIS team is also going to recognize a teacher with a gift certificate.
Overall, the “Thumbs Up” slips have been a huge success in our school and have helped the number of referrals go down. We are already discussing how to better the system for next year.
