Ticonderoga Central School Programs & Activities
F.A.S.T. Fall 2011 Summary/Review
The FAST (Families and School Together) program was successfully run in the fall of 2011 at Ticonderoga Elementary School with eight participating families. Recruitment began in September of 2011 and was done via a flyer sent home to students in grades 3, 4, and 5, as well as referrals from parents and staff.
Each family is asked to focus on one child for the program and surveys and the program had two students from grade 5, five from grade 4, and one from grade 2. The program began on October 21st and ended December 15th with seven of the eight families graduating from the program.
The year’s FAST program focused on empowering the parent and strengthening the family as a whole. Families participated in shared meals, games played at their family table, the “rain” activity, and song time as a family unit. Kids and parents were separated for one hour of the program for kids time/parent time.
Working with Students from older grade levels gave the program a more organized flow. Families were able to quickly learn the routines and became more self-reliant as the program progressed. Older siblings served as
Role models for younger ones.
The participating families reported that their favorite elements of the program were the charades activity and song time. The families that participated in FAST were enthusiastic and appreciative. The kids were motivated and excited to be included in the FAST program.
