A School Safety Day was held in both Essex and Clinton Counties. Sponsored by the Communities of One, Safe Schools/Healthy Students project, each school safety day event was an opportunity for school administrators to learn about programs and services surrounding school safety available through partner organizations and state and county offices. Partners who presented at these events included: Plattsburgh City Police, New York State Police, Sheriff Offices, Probation and Adolescent Services Units, Essex County Mental Health, Behavioral Services North, Champlain Valley Educational Services, Offices of Emergency Services and District Attorneys.
Specifically, the events were designed to include an explanation of the processes and procedures initiated throughout Essex and Clinton Counties in response to a school crisis and share what school administrators and designated staff can do to maximize the safety of their students, staff and community members. Attendees received information regarding the PINS system and adolescent services, mental health programs, emergency services system, emergency planning assistance and training, and the role of the justice system. Attendees were given an opportunity to have questions answered directly by presenters throughout the morning.
School administrators, safety staff, and board members from all schools in Clinton and Essex Counties were invited to attend as part of the outreach of the Coalition for Safe Schools. The Coalition for Safe Schools is a component of the SS/HS project and brings key members of Clinton and Essex County together using interdisciplinary collaboration to maximize each school’s ability to respond to and prevent a school crisis.
Focusing on school safety, the coalition partners have designed an action plan that outlines school safety resources available to all schools and how to access them. This action plan will be presented to each school in Clinton and Essex Counties by February 1, 2011. In addition, the Coalition is establishing a taskforce against bullying to begin meeting in January. All schools and related agencies will be invited to attend. Assemblywoman Janet Duprey has expressed her interest in participating on the taskforce and continues to support the work of the Coalition and the SS/HS project.
