Drug education providers in both Clinton and Essex Counties will facilitate the implementation of three research-based drug prevention programs targeting elementary students. A prevention educator will spend one day per week in each Safe Schools/Healthy Students school district. The prevention educator will provide staff training, program materials, and guidance to ensure drug prevention programs are effectively implemented. The prevention educator will assist districts in data collection and reporting, and program planning and scheduling.
Drug prevention programs supported by the Safe Schools/Healthy Students project include: Families and Schools Together, Too Good For Drugs, and Keep A Clear Mind.
FAST is an after school prevention program. Entire families participate in activities that build parental respect, improve bonds, and enhance family-school relationships.
Each family support group meeting will build upon each other and include a family meal, family communication games, self-help parent support group, supervised play and organized activities, one-to-one parent-mediated play therapy; and opening and closing routines, which model the effectiveness of family rituals for children.

TGFD is a school-based prevention program proven to reduce the intention to use alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs in students. TGFD offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum for each grade level and engages students using interactive teaching methods including:
TGFD also impacts students through the use of “Home Workouts”, a family component.
KACM is a drug education program for children and their parents. The program is comprised of lessons for parents and children to complete together at home, and includes parent newsletters and incentives. Weekly lessons are designed to help children develop specific skills to refuse and avoid the use of “gateway” drugs. This unique, early intervention program has been shown to reduce the risk factors that contribute to later use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
